Growing up in Royston, Hertfordshire, I was always the sort of child who liked being around people. I was a social butterfly and if I'm honest, I never had a clear idea of what I wanted to be when I grew up. What I did know was that I enjoyed being creative and wanted to do something that genuinely interested me.
My parents were incredibly supportive and always encouraged me to follow what I enjoyed rather than choosing a more traditional career path. That led me to study Media at university, where I was able to explore my creative side and develop people skills I still use today.
I've always had an interest in the built environment, something that probably comes from my dad's background in architecture. From a young age I enjoyed creating things, whether that was building virtual worlds on games like The Sims or watching real projects take shape. There's something satisfying about seeing an idea become something tangible that people can use and enjoy.
What I love about our industry is that every project starts with what can seem like a simple material and ends up becoming part of a much bigger story. Seeing products installed and spaces transformed never gets old. Being involved in that journey and seeing the finished result is one of the most rewarding parts of my job.
I also enjoy the challenge of logistics and operations. It's fast-paced, unpredictable and often involves plenty of problem solving. Some people find that stressful. I find it exciting! No two days are ever quite the same.
Like many people at Tectonix, I'm very much a people person. I enjoy building relationships and helping others wherever I can. This industry is full of passionate people and being surrounded by that energy makes work enjoyable.
Outside of work you'll usually find me in the garden, catching up with friends, playing video games or, perhaps surprisingly, crocheting! It's not something many people expect, but I find it a great way to switch off. One thing I've always tried to live by is a simple principle: treat people how you would like to be treated yourself. It's served me well over the years and is a pretty good way to approach both work and life.
