I was born in Durban, South Africa, and moved to Scotland when I was young, a pretty dramatic shift from tropical heat to winters that felt like the Arctic, then eventually moved the England where I well and truly settled down and call this my home. Still, all three places have shaped who I am. I grew up with a mix of cultures: rugby on the weekends, a love for the outdoors, and an Afrikaans upbringing where my dad insisted there’s no such thing as bad weather for a braai. Rain, snow, sideways wind… the braai goes on.
My first career plan involved big engines, wings, and flying at serious speed. I studied aeronautical engineering, but the job market at the time made it clear that breaking into the industry would be a long road. That’s what led me into civil engineering, where I joined FM Conway and ended up spending 15 years working my way up from labourer to Contracts Manager and gaining my qualifications whilst working full time.
Starting at the bottom was one of the best things that could’ve happened to me. It taught me resilience, patience, and how to work with people from every corner of the industry. I was lucky enough to help deliver some of London’s most iconic public realm projects, many packed with history and I’m genuinely proud of what my teams and I achieved at the time.
My move from contractor to supply chain has felt surprisingly natural. I’ve always had a real admiration for natural stone, its character, its versatility, and the way it can completely transform a space. That interest has only grown, and it’s what drives me to think creatively and look beyond the standard, predictable options. I enjoy exploring new ideas and helping create something that feels unique to each project.
For me, relationships are everything. Whether you’re on-site, in design, or in supply, the work only succeeds when people trust each other and communicate well. Materials matter, but the relationships behind them matter more.
I might be relatively new to the “sales” side of the industry, but I bring something you can’t teach, hands on experience. I understand how things work on the ground, what challenges teams face, and what makes a project run smoothly. That knowledge is invaluable, and it’s something I bring into every conversation.
